50th anniversary of the Austrian Armed Forces

2005 marked the 50th anniversary of Östereichs Bundesheer (literally: 'Austrian State Army', but Austrian Armed Forces is a better translation). Celebrations were planned in October to coincide with the National Holiday.

Only weeks before this event would take place some interesting details reached us: there was supposed to be a big flypast of one hundred (!) aircraft. A quick look at the Austrian Order Of Battle learned that this would not be very probable, but we took the gamble and took off for the home of Anton Aus Tirol.

As the flypast would take place over Vienna, we guessed that the best place to witness this would be Tulln airbase. On our way to Tulln we crossed Germany and of course we had to make a stop at a few airbases.

In Austria we visited most of the operational airbases: Zeltweg, Graz, Tull and Linz. Due to the fact that our trip to Austria was a last-minute decision, we had very little time to arrange base-tours. Fortunately, a friendly PAO at Linz was able to set something up for us. The other airbase are pretty open for viewing from outside the fence, so all in all we had ample opportunities to make some nice pictures.
