Manching & Zeltweg

Ingolstadt-Manching

Enroute to Austria we made a stop at Ingolstadt-Maching, the German test base. Manching is a very big base, with two parallel runways that lie on both sides of the base, most of the hangars and facilities are situated between them.

The base is host to WTD-61 which operates a variety of aircraft types. Next to this the DASA factories are also situated on base. During our visit several Eurofighter Typhoons and E-3 Sentries could be seen at these huge hangars.

With a vast number of local enthusiasts that frequently visit the airbase, you can make some pleasant conversation when nothing's going on (just like in the old days). If you add up the perfect photo opportunities, the different aircraft types and lots of flying activities, you could call Manching a perfect base.

Zeltweg

Our first stop in Austria was the last Draken base in the world. After Finland and Sweden, Austria would be the last country to withdraw its SAAB Drakens from active duty. In 2003 Austria signed a contract for 18 Eurofighter Typhoons with delivery starting in 2007. The Drakens will be phased out at the end of 2005 and former Swiss Air Force F-5's is gonna serve as an interim solution.

A total of seven Drakens was towed out to the flightline for the rehearsals of tomorrow's celebrations. Besides this a large formation of eight local based PC-7's took off with for the same purpose.
