Komatsushima: Open Day

On Sunday 20th of May, an open day was held at Komatsushima. This naval airbase is beautifully situated at a bay that is surrounded by hills. The single based squadron (Komatsushima Kokutai) operates the SH-60 Seahawk. The unit also used to operate the HSS-2 (SeaKing) but this old chopper was finally withdrawn from service a few years ago.

When we arrived on base, we discovered that this might very well be the smallest open day we've ever attended. The static show contained only three helicopers: an AH-1 and OH-1, both from Akeno, and a UH-60 from nearby Tokushima Air Base. There was not really a "flying display" during this event. In one of the hangars there was a lottery and the lucky few who won, got the opportunity to experience what it's like to fly in a helicopter. Four of the based helicopters were flying very short circuits with the winners on board.

Despite the small size of this open day, it was very rewarding day. As mentioned before, the backgrounds are truly beautiful and with the numerous take-offs and landings the photo opportunities were ideal.
